As part of an infertility workup, the male partner is evaluated for several parameters.
- Sperm Count
- Sperm Motility
- Sperm Morphology (how the sperm looks)
- Semen Culture for Infection
- Bloodwork to detect if you have the genetic disorder
Hemochromatosis (a disease that causes iron overload
in the body. One of the effects of the disease is infertility)
- Hormone evaluation
- Post coital test (evaluation of the sperm / cervical mucus
interaction after intercourse)
East Coast IVF is a state licenced reference laboratory - Clinical Lab License # 00014148
Infertility workups are performed in our andrology laboratory during the following hours:
Monday - Friday: 7am - 1:30pm
2 Saturdays a month: 7:30am - 9am
You have the option of producing the sample at home as long as you are able to bring it to the office within one hour after collection. If the hours above are
not convenient for you we will make every effort to accommodate your schedule.
Men whose evaluation is within normal limits can pursue less invasive treatments such as natural intercourse with basal temperature monitoring or ovulation
induction.
Men who have a very low sperm count or few moving sperm can use In Vitro Fertilization with Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) as a means of
overcoming the infertility obstacle.

If there are fewer than 5 million sperm present in a semen sample or a motility less than 10%, it is
recommended that you freeze at least one sample of sperm as a backup for your IVF procedure. The
laboratory will notify the physician at the time of the semen analysis if this is the case and the sperm can be
frozen that day.
Men who have a total absence of sperm after an evaluation or who have had a vasectomy can be evaluated
by a urologist and undergo a surgical procedure where the sperm is removed directly from the testicles. This
sperm is frozen to be used during an IVF cycle with ICSI.
Dr. Damien will review all findings and use the information when prescribing a treatment that will be most
effective in treating a couple's infertility.
